Grandmaster E. R. Spruiell

Sensei E. R. Spruiell, born May 5, 1945, is currently active in providing a service to Judo. In 1995, he established the Norfolk School of Judo & Jujitsu, Norfolk Virginia.  His Dojo reflects the philosophy and training of Kodokan Judo and the Sasori Neko Ryu goshin-Jitsu Silat Association.

 Sensei Spruiell has been involved in competing, coaching and officiating in Judo and the Martial Arts.  He began in 1966 for the All-Marine Corps Regional championships.  He was also; Marine Corps champion in 1967 & 1968.

 Sensei Spruiell credits his accomplishments to the leadership and instruction he received from the following instructors:

Mr. John Evans, Yodan; Mr. Ben Sotsug (Gihokan judo Club); Sensei Pop Moore and son, Sensei Roy Moore, Jr. (NTC, San Diego, CA); Mr. Ernie Gates (MI-Marine Corps Champion); Mr. John Rosesberry (all-Marine Corps champion); Mr. Ernie R. Smith (Schichidan Judo & Hichidan jujitsu); Dr. Takahiko Ishikawa (MI-Japanese Champion, Kudan); Mr. George Harris, Kudan; Mr. Philip Porter, Kudan; Mr. John T. Anderson Mr. Robie Reed, and Mr. Sid Kelly (7^th Dan Judo & 6^th Dan Jujitsu-Judo workshop videos, Inc.

 Grandmaster Spruiell provided Judo & Martial Arts instruction at the following organization in the Norfolk and Adjacent areas:

• Calvary Square Family Investment Center
• Family Investment Center at Oakmont North
• Suffolk Family Investment Center
• Norfolk State University- Tidewater Judo Club
• Virginia Judo Club at Virginia Beach Judo School-Virginia Beach Martial Arts Center
• Conducted classes at YMCA in Portsmouth, VA University of Virginia

Achievements

 1^st place-1967-68 Marine Corp. Championship

Awarded Black Belt-Kohaku Shiai

Of 27 Tournaments, sensei Spruiell placed 1^st 21 times

1968 Winner Black Belt Championship an North Island 4th annual Invitational

27-Time Winner of Virginia State Championship & Grand Champion

1970 began the study of Sasori Neko Ryu Goshin Ju-Jitsu

1972 Grand Champion in Shufu Regionals

1974 Promoted to Sandan by the Kodokan

Studied under the great teacher, Mr. Takahiko Ishikawa

1983 Held two weight classes a t USJA National and placed at the U. S. Sports Festival

Senior National Masters Championships 3-time Am/Can Masters Champion

June 26, 1999-World Karate Union Hall of Fame Inducted Sensei E.R. Spruiell as Master Instructor of the year Kodokan Judo
